In preparation for my impending move to Scotland, I thought I’d do a little research. And before I launched into the Rick Steve’s Guide to Scotland, I decided to set the tone of the day with a candy bar named “The Scotsman.”

And oh boy, if the real Scotland is anything like this chocolate bar, I cannot wait to go. This chocolate bar is filled with soft chocolate nougat which is in turn filled with chewy raisins and crunchy peanuts. If melted trail mix were a Pokemon, this chocolate bar would be its evolved form. There is so much chocolate and it is so buttery soft. It melts in your mouth in the most decadent, luxurious way.

I’d say that I imagine eating something like this while out on the highland moors on a cold autumn day but I can just as easily imagine eating it at a high-street chocolatier’s shop in the more gentrified parts of Edenborough. There’s an element of decadence that I normally don’t associate with Scotland – but maybe the Scottishness is in the raisins and peanuts, and the chocolate is a purely Scandinavian addition. Maybe my untrained foreign palate cannot detect the underlying fusion of cultures.

Still, there is no way that Scotland can be quite like this. A girl can dream, though.
